What are the appropriate mapping units for ecosystem service assessments? A systematic review

ABSTRACT Context : Without clear understanding of the units used for ecosystem service (ES) mapping, ES assessment accuracy and practical application knowledge will be hampered. Method We systematically reviewed 106 studies over past 11 years to explore type, characteristic pattern deficiencies mapping units. Result proposed that can categorized into minimal unit assessing ESs using corresponding indicators methods, aggregated analysis based on research objectives, classified five common types. Of 12 characterizing variables studies, some have been shown introduce a difference in selection exhibit patterns. also found assessments was lacking, were insufficient establish link between practice. Conclusion Herein, we propose possible solutions such as use fine spatial resolution grids introduction additional data beyond land cover supplements improve accuracy. To enhance availability results practice, connected with urban planning should established at level suitable management.
